Position Summary:   
This is a restricted position and continued employment is dependent on funding. This position is located in Gloucester Point, VA with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The College of William and Mary invites applications for the position of Marine Scientist to provide scientific expertise to the study of blue catfish populations in tidal tributaries of Chesapeake Bay; plans, coordinates, and arranges schedules and logistical support for laboratory and field operations. Conducts work independently; periodic discussions with supervisor provide general guidance and clarify goals of study. Assures data quality, and proper and timely archiving of such data. Supervises full-time technician and hourly field personnel. Provides effective communication of results to partners and collaborators and other interested parties.  

Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of general biology, fisheries, fisheries sampling techniques, and general scientific principles. Knowledge and experience collecting fish using a variety of sampling gear (such as electrofishing, bottom trawls, beach seines), preferably in estuarine systems. Knowledge of Chesapeake Bay fishery resources and ability to identify fish from freshwater and brackish environments. Ability to work and supervise personnel under physically demanding circumstances, in occassionally harsh conditions. Ability to work on small vessels and resist motion sickness; ability to swim. Ability to assemble laboratory aquarium systems for the maintenance of live fish and conduct of experiments. Must posess excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as computer skills (SAS, R) and ability to conduct statistical analyses, particularly with mark-recapture data. Ability to prepare progress reports and project completion reports in a detailed, accurate, and complete manner. Must possess effective time management, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to train and lead a field crew, work on a team, and work independently. Ability to obtain small-vessel operator's certification at VIMS (including trailering). Ability to prepare protocols for IACUC approval and to adhere to such protocols. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Required: M.S./M.A. degree in fisheries science, marine science, biology, or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience post bachelor's degree. Possession of or ability to obtain a VA driver's license. Previous years experience conducting aquatic field work (can include time spent in the field for M.S./M.A. if project was field related) using or aboard small boats or large vessels. Must have first-hand experience working with live fish, preferably in a laboratory setting. Experience operating and trailering small boats with outboard motors; experience with computers and statistical analyses using SAS, R, or similar.  
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer familiarity with mark-recapture programs such as MARK and SURVIV, and with relational databases (ACCESS, SQL, etc.).

2011 - 006 Research Scientist 2 Toxicology NYSDEC, Albany, NY Temp to 5/2013

Duties: Act as project leader for a U.S. EPA grant funded project to determine and evaluate contaminant levels of legacy and emerging contaminants in fish from New York's Great Lakes and associated water bodies. Conduct all aspects of the project including data management and analysis, comparisons with historical data, quality assurance, report and publication writing, grant management, and establishment of contracts; coordinate fish collection, laboratory contaminant analysis and grant renewal applications. The focus will be on understanding the ecological context of contaminants in multiple fish species with respect to past levels and current spatial patterns, and evaluation of the long term effectiveness of Great Lakes clean up. The position is funded through May 31, 2013, with extension possible through continued grant funding of projected 4.5 year project.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three years of professional research experience in toxicology, ecotoxicology, fisheries, ecology, environmental science, chemistry, biology, or related field; or master's degree and two years of professional research experience in one of these fields; or doctorate degree in one of these fields.
Preferred Qualifications: Ability to perform environmental research projects from data analysis through authorship of scientific papers and reports. Strong scientific writing skills, ability to perform statistical analyses, knowledge of relational database programs and SQL, database management and quality control skills, ability to coordinate project activities with multiple collaborators, knowledge of environmental toxicology, ability to conduct field research and collect fish. Training Specialist IV (Aquatic Education Specialist)

  • General Position Description: Performs advanced training work in the field of aquatic and angler education. Work involves organizing, conducting and evaluating education and training programs, community partnerships and volunteer management, primarily for angler education. Provides service to internal and external customers. Sets regional priorities based upon the goals and strategies outlined for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Communications Division. Reports to a Statewide Program Coordinator. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Working Conditions: (1) Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; (2) Required to perform duties in both indoor and outdoor locations, to include office, classroom and in various environments and occasionally in adverse weather conditions; (3) Required to travel; (4) Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a field directly related to natural resource education and outdoor recreation, such as Park Administration, Recreation, Biology, Forestry, Education, Agriculture Science, Youth Camp Management, Natural Resource Management, Conservation, or Fisheries and Wildlife Management.     • Experience: Four years experience providing training, interpretation or education in outdoor recreation related to duties of the position or a natural resource field, or volunteer management, or as a teacher in a related field. Preferred Qualifications: Experience as an Angler Education Instructor.
    • License/Certifications: (1) Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Class "C" Texas driver's license. (2) Must possess or be able to obtain within 60 days of employment, certification as an Instructor from the TPWD Angler Education Program. NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license and certification. Preferred Qualifications: Certification as an Instructor from the TPWD Angler Education Program.
